Bradley, Next Mayor of White Plains
Dems Take All Council Seats
Published: November 04, 2009

It’s confirmed, Adam Bradley will be the next Mayor of White Plains. The tally is 7,755 votes as all 43 election districts reported results by late morning, Nov. 4.

Endorsed by five parties, Bradley’s total, as listed on the Westchester County Board of Elections website, is comprised of 64 percent Democratic, 26 percent Republican, 4 percent Independence, 3 percent Conservative, and 2 percent Working Families Party.

Completing the White Plains Democratic ticket, Thomas Roach, David Buchwald, and Beth Smayda, took all three of the open Common Council seats confirming a completely Democratic city government in White Plains.

Roach took the lion’s share of votes at 8,065, with 5,001 cast by Democrats, 2,496 by Republicans, 359 by Conservatives, and 209 by members of the Working Families Party. Roach’s win, as the only incumbent on the ballot, reflects strong support for the work he has accomplished to this point. Roach’s results across party lines, particularly from Republican voters, rival those of challengers Jim Arndt (2,733, Republican and 420 Conservative for a total 3,153 votes) and Leonard Lolis (2,772, Republican, 474 Independence, and 406 Conservative, for a total 3,652 votes).

David Buchwald obtained 4,917 Democratic, 409 Independence, and 213 Working Families Party votes, for a total of 5,539. Beth Smayda obtained a total of 5,600 votes, comprised of 4,959 democratic, 425, Independence, and 216 Working Families Party.

County, District 5

In a close vote between Bill Ryan (5,412 votes) and Bob Hyland (5,456 votes) for the County District 5 seat, outstanding absentee ballots will determine the winner. In this race, Ryan won votes from Democrats (5,186) and the Working Families Party (226). Hyland gained support from Republicans (4,351), Independence (698) and Conservatives (407).

County, District 8

Alfreda Williams was the winner in County District 8 with 4,536 votes (4,318 Democratic and 218 Working Families Party). Tom Bock obtained a total 2,440 votes (1,938 Republican, 267 Independence, and 235 Conservative).

County Executive

Although he had support across a span of political parties, Andy Spano lost his job as county executive to Rob Astorino, who took a 16 percent lead. At 68,113, Spano had the support of 62,159 Democrats, 3,234 Conservatives, and 2,720 Working Families Party votes. Astorino, on the other hand, obtained 78,106 Republican and 12,363 Independence Party votes for a 90,469 total.

Despite a 16 percent lead for Republican, Rob Astorino, the County District seats up for grabs went overwhelmingly to the Democrats at 54,931 votes to 9,900 by Republicans. The remaining tally is made up of a relatively low number of Conservative, Independence Party and Working Families Party votes.
